GROWTH MINDSET CHECK UP

This short survey will give you an idea of where you’re at on the mindset spectrum – your starting point

KEY POINT: This is just a rough benchmark. Our mindsets are constantly changing. We can all build the skill of spending more time operating from a growth mindset.

OVERVIEW OF THE RESEARCH

THE SHORT AND SWEET

There are two mindsets that can influence our ability to learn, grow, and achieve our goals.

GROWTH MINDSET: The belief that we are in control of our skills. That they are things that can be developed and improved. That we have the capacity to learn and grow. Skills are built.

FIXED MINDSET: The belief that our skills are set, that we have what we have, and that we cannot change them. That we don’t really have the capacity to change and learn. Skills are born.

The research shows that a growth mindset can help build resilience, determination, and work ethic within students, athletes, and people of all ages.

Carol Dweck’s extensive research shows that building a growth mindset can encourage more learning actions, which helps people learn, grow, and get better.

This table shows how the two mindsets can influence our actions.

Growth Mindset Characteristics Table
KEY POINT #1: This table is great! But the key is to understand that the actions are a byproduct of the belief. To build a growth mindset – focus on the belief, and the actions will follow.

KEY POINT #2: We are not just one or the other. Our mindsets are constantly shifting and changing (the video below explains more)

HOW TO BUILD A GROWTH MINDSET

Rather than just telling people to have a growth mindset, it’s best to present the tools so they can build one organically. When we teach growth mindset in our workshops, this is where we spend most of our time. These three layers are a good place to start:

1. Reflect
“I believe I can learn stuff, because I have learned stuff”

2. Learn Something New
This can be a good reminder of our capacity to grow

3. Understand Neuroplasticity
This is the most important piece of the puzzle. The clips of Dr. Michael Merzenich in the video are so powerful

The video shows how they all work together.

“ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE CAN GET BETTER AT VIRTUALLY ANYTHING”

– Dr. Michael Merzenich (The “Father” of Neuroplasticity)

GROWTH MINDSET CULTURE: CHANGING THE LABELS

THE PYGMALION EFFECT

The labels and expectations of the leader of a group can become self-fulfilling prophecies. To build a great learning environment we need to be aware of the Pygmalion Effect and look at everyone around us as learners.

The world’s leading researcher of the Pygmalion Effect, Dr. Robert Rosenthal joined us on our podcast. If you’re in any sort of leadership role, it will be well worth your time

NEXT STEPS

Now that we’ve built a growth mindset, the next step is to learn to put fear in it’s place
