WORKSHOP MATERIAL + VIDEO CLIPS
Video #1: What Learning Looks Like
We love this video because it’s a great reminder of what real learning looks like. After a bunch of crashes we finally see the ah-ha moment. This is how we learn to walk, ride a bike, sell, lead, and do math.
Truth of learning: When we’re learning something new, we’ll always struggle at first. Struggle and mistakes are the price of admission we have to pay to earn a new skill.
Video #2: WE CAN ALL LEARN
Dr. Michael Merzenich is known as “The Father of Neuroplasticity” he’s been studying brains and learning since the early 1970s.
Neruoplasticity is the foundation for building a strong growth mindset. If we understand that our brains are designed to learn, we’re more likely to believe in our capacity to grow.
Video #3: DANCING WITH FEAR
We think the best approach to dealing with fear is to try to suppress it. Not only is this ineffective, but it will often make the fear even worse.
Instead we should learn to accept it and dance with it. To feel uncomfortable but take the action anyways.
Video #4: PUT FEAR IN ITS PLACE
Elizabeth Gilbert is the author of Big Magic and a number of best-sellers.
This is a great way to think about out fear. We’re never going to kick it out of the car, but we can control where it sits.
Video #5: BENEFITS OF LEARNING
Dr. Michael Merzenich is known as “The Father of Neuroplasticity” he’s been studying brains and learning since the early 1970s.
When we take action and build new skills we improve the machinery that controls learning. We become a better learner every time we learn something new.
Video #6: THE POWER OF MODELING
Karch Kiraly is the head coach of the USA Women’s Olympic Volleyball Team. He’s also known as one of the best volleyball players to ever live.
If we want our people to engage in learning behaviors, we have to put those actions on display. It’s easier to tell people what to do, it’s usually better to walk the walk and model.
